Dear President,
We have learnt of the serious threats against our colleague Vukašin Vujičić, public prosecutor at the Valjevo District Prosecutor’s Office, whose car was set alight near his home.
On behalf of MEDEL, we wish to express our deepest concern regarding this event, which could have had catastrophic consequences. We are even more deeply troubled by the fact that this intimidating act is directed at a public prosecutor who, in connection with his professional activities, has been the target of public attacks by politicians and a media campaign of defamation and persecution.
We stand in solidarity with our colleague in the face of these attacks, which not only undermine public confidence in the judicial system, but constitute as well an attempt to interfere with the independent exercise of professional duties and create a dangerous environment for the security and psychological resilience of prosecutors carrying out their work.
We hope that the investigations will quickly shed light on all the circumstances surrounding this act and reveal the motives behind it. We wish to express our full support for all Serbian public prosecutors who, like our colleague Vukašin Vujičić, continue to work in the interest of justice and citizens despite pressure and attacks, and who speak out in defence of the Rule of law.
